VIC: Victoria to house two major medical research centres

Victoria is to become home to two major medical centres specialising in researching
a cure for diabetes.

The centres will also focus on treating diabetic kidney disease, a debilitating health
complication of diabetes.

The centres will be established by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation - the world's largest
non-profit funder of diabetes research.

JDF chief scientific officer ROBERT GOLDSTEIN says the foundation will spend around
$90 million on research this year, including $7.5 million for the new centres.

Dr GOLDSTEIN says the foundation hopes to raise its international research funding
to $115-$120 million next year.
