Fed: Brown says Howard, Beazley out of touch on Papua

Australian Greens leader BOB BROWN says JOHN HOWARD and KIM BEAZLEY have misjudged
public support for Papuan independence.

Senator BROWN says a Newspoll .. showing 77 per cent of those surveyed support independence
for the Indonesian province .. proves the major parties are wrong.

He says the prime minister's horribly out of touch with Australian values .. and says
the Greens will move a motion supporting self determination for Papua .. when the Senate
resumes in a fortnight.





The nationwide poll of over one thousand people .. conducted a fortnight ago .. was
funded by businessman IAN MELROSE.

He's been a long time supporter of East Timor .. in the country's battle with the Australian
government over the rights to resources in the Timor Sea.
