SA: Mobil denies training "union busters"
Oil company Mobil has accused employees of misconduct while rejecting union claims
it had secretly trained union-busters to break worker resistance at its Adelaide refinery.
The claims by the union have been dismissed as paranoia by the federal government as
Mobil has confirmed it has contingency plans should industrial unrest escalate at the
refinery.
The breakdown culminated at the Port Stanvac refinery in Adelaide on Tuesday when Mobil
said it could not contact emergency maintenance workers at the refinery to perform urgent
repairs.
That incident prompted the company to take the Australian Manufacturers Workers Union
to the Industrial Relations Commission yesterday, where it lost a bid to prove workers
had taken industrial action.
The union has agreed not to take industrial action during the enterprise bargaining negotiations.
